New Taxation Rules and Bank KYC Checks in the UAE

The UAE's financial appeal has changed with the introduction of federal corporate tax. In 2026, compliance with international transparency standards plays a decisive role.

The UAE tax system in 2026

Corporate tax is charged at a progressive rate:

  • Profit up to AED 375,000 (about USD 102,000) — 0% rate.
  • Profit above this threshold — 9% rate.

Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) status

To apply the preferential 0% rate to income from international activity, a free zone company must meet strict criteria:

  • Maintain an adequate level of economic substance in the UAE (local expenditure, staffed employees, a real office).
  • Earn exclusively “Qualifying Income” from transactions with other free zone persons or from specific categories of international trade.
  • Keep proper accounting records and have audited financial statements.

Important: even where a company qualifies for the 0% rate, it must still register for tax, obtain a Tax Registration Number (TRN) and file an annual tax return.

Bank compliance: the process bottleneck

UAE banks strictly follow global KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) procedures.

Key factors in account approval:

  1. 01

    Beneficial owner's country of citizenship

UAE banks classify countries of citizenship into risk tiers (green, amber, red), based on FATF ratings and international sanctions. For nationals of higher-risk countries, review (Enhanced Due Diligence) will be deeper and will require evidence that all funds are of legitimate origin.

  2. 02

Beneficial owner's country of tax residence

The bank will require a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the country of residence, along with personal account statements for the last 6 months to review the movement of funds.

  3. 03

    Business substance

Having a physical office (even a minimal Flexi-desk in a reputable free zone) significantly improves approval chances compared with nominal addresses in low-cost northern emirates.
